Newcastle United linked with defender double deal as search for January recruits heats up

Newcastle United’s search for winter window recruits is heating up with two defenders linked with a move to St James’s Park.

The Magpies, according to reports, are keen to explore a potential loan deal with Manchester United for out-of-favour England international Phil Jones.

And, the Daily Mail report, United could also look to be reunited with one of their former players impressing north of the border – with links to Rangers and the Scottish Premiership’s top-scorer James Tavernier.

Bruce is looking to strengthen in the January window with further striker options, a midfielder and defensive recruits all being considered.

Any moves in the winter window are likely to be temporary, with Mike Ashley unlikely to sanction any permanent deals given the ongoing uncertainty around the club’s ownership.

Last January Newcastle United also opted to strengthen via the loan market adding Valentino Lazaro from Inter Milan, Nabil Bentaleb from Schalke and Danny Rose from Tottenham Hotspur.
