The Gazette reported last week that the Magpies had lined up a move for Manchester United's Brandon Williams, but the full-back now looks set to stay at Old Trafford.
But while one door closes, another one opens, and that could be the case with Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori.
Newcastle are one of the clubs, along with Leeds United and West Ham United, touted with a loan move for the England international.
And Blues boss Frank Lampard has perhaps dropped his biggest hint yet in regards to the player’s short-term future.
“Fikayo Tomori absolutely has a long-term future at this club, and we’ll see if and when he goes on loan,” said Lampard.
He continued: “There’s an absolute long-term plan for Fikayo in my head about his career here.
“And if it’s to go and play games it’s to absolutely enhance his personal development. Hopefully, help whatever team he goes to, because that will come hand in hand, and then come back to us a better player.”
Steve Bruce, under pressure from Magpies fans, has until 11pm on Monday, February 1, to strengthen his squad.
Although there are calls to sack the 60-year-old, his immediate future isn’t in any danger, so it’s very likely he’ll see out the remainder of the transfer window.
Meanwhile, a former Premier League loanee has played down speculation linking him with a move to St James’s Park.
Here’s a round-up of some of the other transfer rumours involving Newcastle, including Tomori, and their Premier League rivals this morning:

5. Blades urged to sign Carroll
Former Sunderland defender Nedum Onuoha has urged Andy Carroll to leave Newcastle and join Sheffield United. He said: “For me, somebody with a point to prove, because for the past couple of years he has not done much at all, even if it was to be a loan, is for them to bring in an Andy Carroll, so they have got an aerial threat.” (BBC 5 Live) Photo: Michael Regan
