'His groin' - Defender injury blow after Newcastle United transfer decision as record signing makes debut

There were mixed fortunes for Newcastle United players spending time out on loan over the weekend.

League One club Luton Town are awaiting news over a groin injury suffered by on-loan Newcastle United defender Harrison Ashby during Saturday’s home draw with third tier rivals Leyton Orient.

The former West Ham United youngster joined the Magpies in January 2023 but is yet to make his senior competitive debut despite appearing in a number of pre-season friendlies under former manager Eddie Howe. Ashby has earned first-team experience during loan stints with Swansea City, QPR and Bradford City over recent seasons - and he landed another temporary move away from Tyneside earlier this summer when he joined Luton on a season-long agreement.

Ashby completed his first 90-minute league appearance for the Hatters in last week’s impressive 2-0 win against Stockport County - but he lasted for just 21 minutes in their draw with Orient on Saturday. Luton boss Jack Wilshere revealed he was unsure of the severity of the blow but is hopeful it was ‘not too bad’ after Ashby had produced what he described as an ‘excellent’ display during his previous appearance.

He told the Hatters club website: “I don’t know [how Ashby is]; I didn’t actually see it – someone told me straight away he was holding his groin. Let’s hope it is not too bad because the other night [against Stockport] he was excellent and he earned his place in the team again. So, let us hope it’s not too bad.”

There were mixed fortunes for other Newcastle players spending time out on loan over the weekend as German forward Nick Woltemade came off the bench to make his debut to Serie A giants Juventus. The former Stuttgart star was introduced with quarter of an hour remaining as his new side battled to a 1-1 home draw with AC Milan. Goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos also played a part in a 1-1 draw as his loan club Sevilla shared the spoils with La Liga rivals Sevilla and young winger Antonio Cordero provided an assist as Cadiz fell to a 3-2 defeat against Almeria in Spanish football’s second tier.

Sean Neave came off the bench in the closing stages of Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 2-2 draw with Championship rivals Birmingham City and recent signing Ousmane Diabate played for 75 minutes for Genclerbirligi as they crashed to a 5-0 defeat against Trabzonspor. Anthony Munda won a penalty as Swindon Town claimed a 3-1 home win against Colchester United and Rory Finneran impressed once again in Notts County’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town. Alex Murphy appeared for the final 15 minutes of Kaiserslautern’s 3-0 home win against Darmstadt and Leo Shahar could make his debut for loan club Arouca in Monday’s visit to Estoril after joining the Portuguese club on a season-long deal last week.
