Jetro Willems and Javier Manquillo were taken off at St James’s Park before the break.
Jonjo Shelvey – who had been struggling before the break – didn’t make it out for the second half.
Sean Longstaff came on for stand-in captain Shelvey.
Fabian Schar was forced off early in the second half, leaving United to play the rest of the game with 10 men.
