Eddie Howe’s Newcastle are sitting third in the Premier League table with 30 points. It is the club’s best start to a season since the 1995-96 campaign, a season which saw them finish second and come within touching distance of claiming the Premier League title.
Our Newcastle United writers Miles Starforth and Dominic Scurr assess the opening 15 matches of the season and highlight the key players, moments and matches witnessed so far...
13. Miles’ best atmosphere so far this season
Miles’ view: The Chelsea game, again. The last 10 minutes, as Newcastle tried to see out the game, and the celebrations after the final whistle were something else.

14. Dominic’s best atmosphere so far this season
Dominic’s view: The latter stages of the Chelsea game is certainly up there, particularly after the game. For me, the atmosphere throughout the 3-3 draw with Manchester City back in August was also brilliant. After an early setback the Newcastle fans and players sensed blood as they hammered City for the best part of an hour. The noise when Kieran Trippier’s free-kick sailed in was deafening. United may have been hanging on in the closing stages but the support from the stands helped them get a point over the line.

15. Miles’ Newcastle priority for January
Miles’ view: You’d think that a winger would still be on the agenda, despite Almiron’s form. Howe and sporting director Dan Ashworth, however, will be looking at what’s available in every position.

16. Dominic’s Newcastle priority for January
Dominic’s view: Things are going very well at Newcastle but there’s still a slightly uneasy feeling that things could go wrong if they were to pick up a few injuries. Bolstering the squad in preparation for potential European football next season should be a priority. There’s no need to splash out millions of pounds, just sensible additions that help add to the depth of the squad. A full-back, attacking midfield and winger are probably the key areas to look at.
