Newcastle United's net spend compared to Premier League rivals ahead of January transfer window
Newcastle United were busy in the summer transfer window, but how did their business compare to the rest of the Premier League?
It’s been a slow start to the Premier League season for Newcastle United, who will already be casting an eye toward the fast-approaching January transfer window.
The Magpies were busy in the summer market, signing the likes of Nick Woltemade, Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga and Malick Thiaw, while Alexander Isak’s eventual move to Liverpool dominated the headlines. In the cups, Newcastle have looked accomplished, taking nine points from four Champions League games so far, while beating Bradford City and Tottenham Hotspur to maintain their EFL Cup title defence.
In the league, however, a disappointing 3-1 defeat to West Ham last time out has left Newcastle 13th, with just 12 points on the board from 10 games so far. Eddie Howe’s men have underperformed in the final third, scoring just 10 goals, while 11 goals conceded is respectable, but is outperformed by six teams.
But will Newcastle - who face Brentford away and Manchester City at home in their next two games - have much to spend in January to improve their fortunes? To answer that question, it might be best to look at how much their summer window cost them.

Newcastle United’s heavy spend offset by Alexander Isak sale
Newcastle’s gross spend of €278.85m was the fourth-highest in the Premier League this summer, behind only Arsenal (€293.50m), Chelsea (€339.15m) and Liverpool (€482.90m). However, the Magpies’ sale of Isak to the Reds went a long way toward offsetting that, meaning their net spend of €102.85m was only the 10th-highest, and the sixth-lowest among sides to have made a loss.

Only five teams ended the window having made a profit, with Bournemouth comfortably top of that list at €100.31m, thanks to the big sales of defenders Ilya Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez to PSG, Real Madrid, and Liverpool, respectively, while Dango Ouattara, Jaidon Anthony, Philip Billing and Mark Travers also fetched healthy fees for the Cherries.
