'Amazing club' - Newcastle United unveil stunning £50m signing in front of packed St James' Park

Newcastle United have completed the £50million signing of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City.

Newcastle United unveiled £50million signing Nico Gonzalez to the St James’ Park crowd ahead of the Carabao Cup clash against West Bromwich Albion.

The 24-year-old midfielder has joined from Premier League rivals Manchester City to become the Magpies’ seventh signing of the summer after Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba, Lukas Hornicek and Amar Dedic.

Gonzalez, regarded as a marquee signing in a transitional summer for the club, takes United’s summer spending total to around £220million.

‘I’m really happy’ - Nico Gonzalez reacts to joining Newcastle United

“I’m really happy to be here at this amazing club,” said Gonzalez. “I’ve only heard top words about the club and the city, so I’m really excited to live here and to be part of this project.

“I love the black and white shirt already and I can’t wait to start wearing it on the pitch for this club.

“I’ve experienced playing at St. James’ Park twice with Manchester City and it was really tough. The atmosphere was amazing and the fans are so passionate. I can’t wait to experience that as a home player.”

Following the signings of 18-year-old Steur and 20-year-old Bamba, Matthias Jaissle, who succeeded Eddie Howe as head coach earlier this month, had been keen to recruit an experienced midfielder, and in Gonzalez he has that.

Gonzalez, who has represented Spain at under-21s level, came through the academy at Barcelona and went on to make 37 first-team appearances before joining Porto in 2023. He spent the season before he moved to Portugal on loan at Valencia.

At Porto, Gonzalez featured 68 times before Man City came calling in January 2025, however he has struggled to nail down a regular spot in the starting XI.

Matthias Jaissle & Ross Wilson react to Nico Gonzalez signing

“I’m very happy to see Nico become a Newcastle United player,” Jaissle said. “He brings serious quality and elite experience in a key area of the pitch.

“Nico is a really strong ball carrier - somebody who can drive the team forward while staying composed under pressure. He also brings discipline defensively, he reads the game well and his physicality makes him well suited to the Premier League.

“Nico is a proven winner who has already played at some huge clubs in Europe’s top leagues, but he’s also still young and hungry to develop further. He is a fantastic addition to our squad.”
