Anthony Gordon injury update fuels conspiracies before Arsenal vs Newcastle United

Anthony Gordon missed the 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday with a hip problem.

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is reportedly a major doubt to face Arsenal this weekend.

Eddie Howe dropped a bombshell by leaving the 25-year-old out of his matchday squad for the 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth. Conspiracy theories instantly circulated given the intense speculation surrounding Gordon’s future.

However, the Magpies were keen to dismiss the noise - insisting his absence was injury-related. Howe confirmed at the full-time whistle that Gordon suffered a hip problem in training.

“Today was an injury,” Howe told reporters. “He went for a scan on, again, I think it was Thursday morning, and it was clear he had an injury that would take him out of the game.

“I don't think it's a long-term injury. Whether he makes it next week, I don't know. We'll have to see how he goes this week in training.”

The Daily Mail now claim that Gordon is a doubt for the trip to North London on Saturday. Newcastle travel to the Premier League leaders with little to play for after losing four consecutive games across all competitions.

The Magpies could have a big say in the title race, with Arsenal desperate to bounce back after losing control to Manchester City. A shock victory would be even more surprising if they overcome the Gunners without Gordon.

Interestingly, the report suggests there are no fears that his setback will jeopardise a World Cup spot. That is unlikely to dampen the noise on Tyneside regarding his commitment to Newcastle.

It is also noted that Tino Livramento - who hobbled off while clutching his groin against Bournemouth - may not play again this season. The defender is another Magpies star linked with a potential summer switch.
