Out of retirement - Jonjo Shelvey makes former Newcastle United star first signing as manager
Danny Simpson spent three-and-a-half seasons at Newcastle United and has come out of retirement to join Arabian Falcons.
Danny Simpson has come out of retirement to link up with Jonjo Shelvey at Arabian Falcons.
In April, Shelvey confirmed his retirement as a player but he would remain at the Dubai club as manager until the end of the season. An announcement over the weekend extended Shelvey’s stay ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Founded in 2023, Arabian Falcons have several former Premier League stars in their ranks. Jason Puncheon is the co-owner and head of football operations, with former Manchester United midfielder Ravel Morrison signed as a player.

Danny Simpson joins Arabian Falcons
Shelvey has now recruited Simpson - who spent three-and-a-half years at Newcastle United - as his first summer signing. The 39-year-old retired professionally in 2024 but enjoyed a brief stint at non-league club Stretford Paddock last season.
“The opportunity to join Jonjo and this exciting project was one I couldn’t turn down,” Simpson said. “I still have plenty to offer on the pitch, and I’m looking forward to helping the team achieve its ambitions. The club has a clear plan, and I want to play my part in delivering a successful promotion-winning campaign.”
Jonjo Shelvey reacts
On signing Simpson, former Toon midfielder Shelvey added: “I’m really pleased to welcome Danny Simpson to Arabian Falcons. After stepping in for the last five games last season and coming so close to promotion, we now have the opportunity to build properly in my first full campaign.
“Danny is the ideal signing - a Premier League champion with vast experience, leadership, and a winning mentality. He strengthens us immediately on the pitch and will be invaluable in helping develop the squad. This is the start of us building a team I firmly believe can win promotion this season.”
