Newcastle United to pay £9.5m after shock Eddie Howe resignation - full details

Newcastle United are yet to officially announce Matthias Jaissle’s appointment as Eddie Howe’s successor.

Newcastle United have paid £9.5million to activate Matthias Jaissle’s release clause at Al-Ahli.

It is the worst-kept secret in football that the German will replace Eddie Howe at St James’ Park. At the time of writing, the Magpies are yet to officially announce Jaissle as manager.

Howe stepped down on Thursday - with the club confirming his decision 24 hours later. Jaissle has linked up with the first-team squad in Spain as Toon fans eagerly await an update from the club.

Matthias Jaissle release clause

Newcastle have stumped up £9.5million to trigger Jaissle’s release. That is despite both clubs being owned by the Public Investment Fund.

Al-Ahli wanted to keep Jaissle but a Premier League move proved too good an opportunity to turn down. The 38-year-old will lead a youthful Toon side into a rebuild after losing high-profile stars like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.

Bruno Guimaraes could be next as he angles for a move to Arsenal. He is yet to begin his pre-season preparations, with Newcastle expecting him to arrive on Monday.

Eddie Howe farewell message

On leaving Newcastle, Howe told the club website: "After nearly five years of giving my life, heart and soul into the club with unrelenting energy, I feel that it is in the best interests of both myself and the club to step away, recharge and take a break.

"Although it's been incredibly difficult to make this decision, I know in my heart that it's the right one. It has been the privilege of my lifetime to have been the manager of Newcastle United.

"There have been so many incredible moments in our time here," Howe added. "From fighting relegation in our first season to the numerous unforgettable nights at St James' Park in the Champions League soon after. The progression was fast.

"Everyone came together, united and what a force we became. These are all memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life."
