Elliot Anderson preferred club revealed - Newcastle United watch on as £125m move close

Manchester City are growing increasingly confident in the race to sign former Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Elliot Anderson is hoping to seal a British transfer record move to Manchester City this summer.

Newcastle United reluctantly sold their academy product due to PSR pressures two years ago. With a Premier League points deduction looming, Toon chiefs sacrificed Anderson - as well as Yankuba Minteh - to alleviate the financial situation.

The Magpies have watched Anderson become an established top-flight star and England international. Thomas Tuchel started the Whitley Bay native in the opening two games of the World Cup.

Elliot Anderson wants Man City move

It is no secret that Man City are chasing the former Toon youngster. Nottingham Forest rejected an offer totalling £121million earlier this month.

Manchester United have also been linked with Anderson but, according to talkSPORT, he only wants City. There is growing confidence from the Etihad that the 23-year-old will be allowed to leave.

Forest aim to fetch a British record fee for a player they signed for effectively £15million just two years ago. As it stands, Alexander Isak’s controversial move to Liverpool last summer - worth £125million - is the highest fee paid by a Premier League club.

Eddie Howe ‘regretted’ Elliot Anderson transfer

Eddie Howe has repeatedly discussed his regret at being forced to sell Anderson two years ago. He said: “It was something we regretted when we were doing it, and we knew that that would be a very, very painful transfer, one that we had to do, we had no choice.

“But it was probably the most reluctant transfer I'll ever do because you knew the quality, we knew the quality of the player, we'd seen him close up for a number of years training with us. He was beginning to break into the team at the back end of that season.

“He was being really effective in a number of different positions. It really hurts to see him do that against us today. He's going to go and have a fantastic career wherever he goes, wherever his career takes him. He's a great lad as well, so it's painful for us to take, but he's an outstanding player.”
