‘Disappointed’ - Jacob Ramsey honest about Newcastle United situation and reveals position change

Jacob Ramsey is aiming to stake his claim in the Newcastle United team now Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have left the club.

Jacob Ramsey has admitted he felt hard done by not to start in any of the opening three Premier League fixtures.

The midfielder was named on the team sheet for four of the six pre-season games. Signed last summer for £40million, Ramsey endured a mixed debut campaign at St James’ Park.

He highlighted the desire to push for an England call-up as a key reason behind leaving Aston Villa. However, while there were flashes of quality - notably his goal at Tottenham Hotspur - Ramsey failed to pin down a regular berth.

‘I was disappointed’ - Jacob Ramsey

Speaking to reporters, Ramsey - who spared Newcastle’s blushes with a late equaliser against Bournemouth - opened up about the “disappointment” at starting the season on the bench. He also recognises the opportunity to stake his claim now Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali have left.

“I was disappointed not to start in any of the Premier League games,” Ramsey said. “But I've got big self-belief in my ability. I'm a confident lad and hopefully, I'll get the opportunity to prove that I can play here.

“If you're looking from the outside, two big players leaving in my position, it's time for me to step up now and I’m looking forward to it. It's a big challenge. When I came to Newcastle, I wanted to play week in, week out. Obviously, I haven't done that so far, but football can change so quick. It's only the third game. But I’m looking forward to it.”

Jacob Ramsey reveals position change

While Ramsey produced the goods as a central midfielder, he revealed a tactical shift ahead of the Cherries clash. The 25-year-old added: “Funnily enough, last week in training, I’ve been playing as a No10. I trained really well this week.

“Me and Wissa, we linked up really well. I came on a little bit deeper. I'm comfortable on the ball, whether that's deeper or in the No.10.

“At Villa, I was playing off the left, but in the left No.10 position. I don't mind really. Obviously, I want to be scoring goals, setting up Wissa, setting up Osula, setting up all the boys. But today the manager told me to come on in the No.6 (role) and I thought I did well.”
