Bowen, 22, has been in red-hot form for the Tigers and took his Championship goal tally to 11 this season after netting a brace against Middlesbrough on Sunday.

The playmaker, who previously worked under Steve Bruce at Hull, will see his contract expire in the summer, while the club have the option to trigger a one-year extension.

When asked about Bowen’s contract situation, McCann told the Hull Daily Mail: “We would love him to sign a new deal but we understand where he is at.

“He has got a year and a half left, it’s completely down to Jarrod and his representatives but I think he is focused on his football. That is the most important thing.”

Newcastle youngster sets high target

Magpies goalkeeper Freddie Woodman says it’s his “ultimate goal” to play for England one day – and has spoken about his relationship with godfather Gareth Southgate.

The 22-year-old has been a regular at Swansea City in the Championship this season after making a loan switch to the Welsh club in the summer.

Woodman has also played for England’s youth sides and now hopes he can earn a chance with the senior team.

“If you end up playing for England, it means you are a good player and you have done something well,” Woodman told BBC Sport Wales. “Hopefully I can get there in the end.

“I have got a few England shirts he (Southgate) gave me for birthdays growing up - they are up in the house. But I haven’t had a present for a few years. As you get older you get a WhatsApp instead.”

Sergio Aguero to miss Newcastle clash

The 31-year-old hobbled off with a thigh injury during City’s 2-1 win over Chelsea on Saturday and will now be sidelined for a few weeks.

Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus, 22, is expected to take Aguero’s place.
