Jurgen Klopp sensationally set to manage £100m Newcastle United duo

Jurgen Klopp is close to becoming the new Germany manager after Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation.

Germany have held talks with Jurgen Klopp about becoming their new manager following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation.

A dismal World Cup saw Germany crash out on penalties to Paraguay in the round of 32. This was the first time in history that they exited the competition via spot-kicks - with Nick Woltemade one of three players missing from 12 yards.

Nagelsmann refrained from using Woltemade until the final game despite criticising Newcastle United for playing him in midfield. Malick Thiaw also made two substitute appearances as Germany endured another early World Cup exit.

Julian Nagelsmann departure

Nagelsmann’s position became untenable the moment Jose Canale buried the winning penalty. The pressure had already begun mounting on the manager after tepid displays against Ivory Coast and Ecuador.

He led Germany to the quarter-final at Euro 2024 - an underwhelming showing as the host nation. Addressing supporters after the Paraguay defeat, Nagelsmann apologised as he resigned as manager.

“The decision was anything but easy for me,” Nagelsmann said in a statement. “My top priority has always been the success of the team.

“After such a bitter disappointment, it deserves the chance of a new beginning. I am sorry and hurt from the bottom of my heart that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more football nights at this World Cup.”

Jurgen Klopp talks

It is now being widely reported that the German FA are in talks with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. Out of management since leaving the Reds in 2024, the 59-year-old is the Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull.

Klopp cited fatigue as the key reason for ending his nine-year reign at Anfield. However, a less demanding schedule as international manager - plus the need to revive German football - could appeal.

Newcastle duo Woltemade and Thiaw will be eagerly awaiting the announcement. Reports earlier this year claimed that Klopp would make Woltemade a target amid reports linking him to the Real Madrid job.
