The young keeper had been in and out of Lee Clark’s team since signing in the summer and as a result United brought short Harker’s Croft Park spell.

Meanwhile, former Newcastle defender Jonathan Woodgate is hanging on by a thread at Middlesbrough, with a former United manager reportedly eyed to replace him the Riverside dugout.

Having rejected the chance to join Premier League strugglers Watford on a short-term deal, Chris Hughton reportedly tops the queue to replace Woodgate, provided results do not improve for the ex-England, Leeds United and Real Madrid man.

Elsewhere, Southampton got an injury boost ahead of their trip to St James's Park with the news Sofiane Boufal is likely to be FIT to start on Tyneside.

He is expected to train tomorrow after a toe injury.
