‘He’s really good’ - Nico Gonzalez left stunned by one Newcastle United teammate

Nico Gonzalez and Lewis Miley started in midfield for the first time as Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

Nico Gonzalez has described Lewis Miley as a “top player” following his Newcastle United debut.

The duo combined in midfield for the first time on Saturday - and got off to a flyer with a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur. Matthias Jaissle gave Gonzalez and Miley a show of confidence as the starting pair.

Both players stifled Sandro Tonali - a supposed £100million player - to cement their positions as first choice in the engine room. Alongside Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba, Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock, the Magpies now have a blend of youth and experience to choose from.

‘He’s really good’ - Nico Gonzalez

Gonzalez has now hailed Miley - claiming the youngster is better than he was at the same age. He said: “He's really good. He has a lot of calm on the ball which is important. I think he's 20. When I was 20 I didn't play that well, he's a top player.”

Alan Pardew on Lewis Miley

Speaking to talkSPORT, ex-Newcastle boss Pardew tipped Miley for a future England call-up. He said: "I want to speak about Miley. They have sold Tonali, and I want you to ask me if I'd rather have Tonali or Miley. Miley, all day long. He's young, he's quick, and he's got great technique.

"He's got great temperament and he is going to be around for the next 10 years. I think he is going to play for England. He was outstanding for a young player, so Newcastle might have done some really good business.

"That is something they might have known in that camp. I am sure Eddie Howe knows it, that Miley could be better than Tonali. It feels like they've moved Tonali on and are letting the young lad spread his wings."

Matthias Jaissle on Lewis Miley

Jaissle previously raved about Miley while asking for reporters not to raise the pressure on his shoulders. He added: “I don't want to give him a huge responsibility and pressure, and you should also not give him that from outside. He has so much potential.

“We need to let him grow, develop naturally. He gets the full support. But, I'm really looking forward to seeing him, 100 per cent fit and ready because of his qualities. It's, it's a true, true talent."
