Newcastle United news: Rafa Benitez on Mike Ashley, striker stakes claim plus Rondon proves just why NUFC SHOULD have signed him

A goal for one of the old guard, and another for the next generation proved two very different points to the Newcastle United hierarchy this week.

Elias Sorensen, devoid of gametime at Carlisle United, is said to be under review by loan coordinator Shola Ameobi, but he staked a Brunton Park first-team claim with a goal in a 4-0 reserve win for the Cumbrians over Morecambe. Watching on from the stands was caretaker boss Gavin Skelton, who could be replaced by former NUFC frontman Michael Bridges this week.

If Sorensen’s plight (here he talks of his frustration) proves United need to consider the next moves for their next generation more carefully, an international treble from a player they slip through their grasp in the summer proves a whole different point.

Salomon Rondon, now playing under Rafa Benitez at Dalian Yifang, scored three goals for Venezuela against Japan, who did not call up Yoshinori Muto.

Elsewhere, Rafa Benitez has spoken about his enduring love for Newcastle United – and the club’s fans.

As well as discussing why he could not continue under Mike Ashley.

And finally, Newcastle United look set to be beaten to the loan capture of Portuguese defender Aurelio Buta.
