The 33-year-old is a free transfer this summer when his Paris Saint-Germain deal comes to an end – and a post-Mike Ashley Newcastle are looking at a deal for the player, according to ESPN’s Julien Laurens.

Cavani reportedly tops a list of high-profile ‘free agent’ players United will look to add to their ranks when the 2019/20 season is completed and the transfer window next opens up.

Laurens also claims Napoli forward Dries Mertens is on that list, as well as Chelsea forward Willian.

Further to this it is also claimed the Magpies’ prospective new owners will go after a big-name manager Rafa Benitez joined by Italian Massimiliano Allegri and former Spurs man Mauricio Pochettino among their preferred candidates.

Swiss-born Borussia Dortmund boss Lucien Favre has also been linked with the post.

Meanwhile, PSG could move in to nab a current United player from under the club’s noses.
