Victor Munoz profiled - What Newcastle United supporters must know as £35m deal close

Victor Munoz could be a Newcastle United player in a matter of weeks - here is everything you need to know about the Spanish winger.

Newcastle United are inching towards a big-money move for Osasuna winger Victor Munoz.

Anthony Gordon’s swift departure following the 2025-26 campaign propelled a wideman high up the priority list at St James’ Park. The Gazette understands there is growing confidence within Toon circles that they can strike a deal for Munoz in the coming weeks.

Currently on World Cup duty, Munoz - like Gordon - is focused on adding a second star to his nation’s shirt. Spain kick off their campaign against Cape Verde tonight… so what better time to provide an insight into the Toon target.

Background

Born in Barcelona, it is perhaps no surprise that he was a product of the world-renowned La Masia youth system. He was poached from the neighbouring Saint Gabriel - famous for its women’s team - as an 11-year-old.

However, a lack of progression at Barca saw Munoz leave just three years later. He joined local outfit Damm, a club dedicated to developing youth talent.

It was here that Munoz piqued Real Madrid’s interest and he made the move to the capital aged 17. He spent four years in the Los Blancos setup and earned two La Liga cameos before seeking first-team football at Osasuna last summer.

Achievements

Given last year was his breakout campaign as a professional, his trophy cabinet is empty. But Munoz was instrumental in keeping Osasuna in the division.

Los Rojillos finished 17th - above the drop zone on goal difference. Munoz’s six goals, two assists and dynamic performances despite being in his breakout season is what caught Newcastle’s eye.

He scooped the La Liga under-23 Player of the Month for both February and March to stake his claim for Spain’s World Cup squad. Osasuna paid just €5million to sign Munoz less than a year ago, with his efforts towards survival repaying that fee tenfold.

Playing style

If - as is looking increasingly likely - Munoz becomes a Newcastle player, he will certainly be Gordon’s successor. Possessing rapid speed, the 22-year-old plays predominantly off the left flank.

However, he can also operate from the right or as a No.9. Ring any bells? Newcastle have done their homework when profiling Munoz as he appears tailor-made to take on the Gordon mantle.

The Spain international managed 2.53 successful dribbles per 90 minutes last season - one of La Liga’s best. Only Lamine Yamal, Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe - none of whom fought relegation - managed more.

Where would he fit in?

As mentioned, Munoz is a natural left-winger. His main competition for that spot would be Harvey Barnes, who netted 16 times in 2025-26.

Eddie Howe is loyal to his 4-3-3 system, with Osasuna predominantly setting up in a 4-2-3-1. Those two formations are similar and would not deliver a drastic change from his home comforts.

Interestingly, Osasuna play Ante Budimir - a physically strong target man - as the No.9. Nick Woltemade has more technical attributes than the Bosnian but that could be an area of intrigue for Newcastle.
