Financier Amanada Staveley, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and billionaire property investors David and Simon Reuben, has agreed a £300million deal for the club.

The proposed deal, which was struck following months of talks, is now with the Premier League, who are running their owners’ and directors’ test on the prospective buyers.

Neither side has commented on the proposed deal, which could be ratified before the Premier League, which has been suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, restarts.

However, Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin was asked about the takeover, and the implications for the club, by ESPN FC.

“Obviously the more money you have, the better players you can buy,” said Yedlin, who joined United from Tottenham Hotspur in 2016. “Ultimately, in most circumstances, the better you’ll be. But to be a good team, you have to have players that have bought into what you’re doing.

“Just because you’re buying an expensive player, doesn’t mean he will be good for that team. In this day and age, you do need money to compete.

“We’ll see what happens from the takeover, I know just as much as everyone else.”

Yedlin also spoke about his desire to see the season completed – if it’s deemed safe to do so.

“I’d love to see the season finish,” said the 26-year-old. “Hopefully, everything comes out the best and the virus leaves and people stop losing their lives.”
