Eberechi Eze’s early strike proved to be the difference between the sides as Newcastle remained in the game thoughout but ultimately failed to overly test David Raya in the Arsenal goal.

After the match, head coach Eddie Howe claimed it was a ‘much better’ display from his side despite falling to a ninth defeat in 12 league games. But was that reflected in our player ratings? Take a look below...

Here are the Newcastle United player ratings from the 1-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium...

Nick Pope - 5

Came back into the side after two months out and largely did okay claiming crosses and made a couple of decent saves. Got nowhere near Eze’s excellent strike but couldn’t do much about it. Almost had a disaster late on after he misjudged a ball rushing off his line and took out Viktor Gyokeres but escaped with a yellow card.

Lewis Miley - 7

Newcastle’s best right-back option at the moment. Barely put a foot wrong on his return to the position.

Malick Thiaw - 8

Made several good challenges and battled well to keep Arsenal at arm’s length for the majority of the game.

Sven Botman - 6

Now demasked but still not quite at his best with question marks over his distribution.

Dan Burn - 6

A steady performance back at left-back on his return to the side as the preferred option to Lewis Hall. Saw a header saved in the second half.

Sandro Tonali - 7

Gave his all and never stopped running. Just lacked the final ball or shot despite testing David Raya in the first half.

Bruno Guimaraes - 7

Curled an early shot over and offered Newcastle more purpose and control in the middle of the park. Part of the reason for the side’s improvement.

Joe Willock - 7

A bright spark in the first half with a great ball through to Will Osula early on. Faded in the second.

Jacob Murphy - 5

Came into the side for Anthony Elanga and was a marginal improvement on him, though that wasn’t saying much.

Jacob Ramsey - 5

Had a couple of neat touches but largely struggled to get his foot on the ball and impact the game.

Will Osula - 6

Should have put Newcastle in front early on but lost his footing. Ran around and gave the defenders something to think about.

Substitutes

Yoane Wissa (on for Osula, 66) - 5

Given an opportunity to impress. Looked okay outside of the box but squandered the big opportunity that came his way late on.

Harvey Barnes (on for Murphy, 66) - 5

Didn’t offer much as Newcastle looked to find a goal.

Nick Woltemade (on for Guimaraes, 75) - 7

A bright spark in the closing stages of the match following his introduction. Played a great lobbed ball to set up Wissa and carried the ball well. A classy cameo.

Anthony Elanga (on for Willock, 86) - N/A

Had to do a lot more tracking back in the final moments than expected as Arsenal kept trying to catch Newcastle on the counter.
