Newcastle United’s first Champions League match in over 20 years saw around 3,900 away supporters travel to the San Siro for the group stage opener. Eddie Howe made three changes to his side that beat Brentford 1-0 over the weekend with Sandro Tonali returning against his former club, Alexander Isak starting up front and Jacob Murphy on the right win in place of Elliot Anderson, Callum Wilson and Harvey Barnes.
Milan dominated the chances in the first half with 14 shots on goal to Newcastle’s two but the game remained goalless at the break thanks to Nick Pope’s efforts in goal for The Magpies.

5. Dan Burn - 7
Lacked quality on the ball but won some important defensive headers, particularly from set-pieces.
6. Bruno Guimaraes - 7
Milan were able to overrun Newcastle in midfield but still made some important challenges in and around the penalty area and improved as the game went on.

Scrappy in the midfield which was effective for Newcastle at times with his energy and endeavour. Had a chance to win it at the end with Newcastle’s first shot on target.
8. Sandro Tonali - 6
Played in an advanced midfield role and given license to get forward against his former club but had little effect in the final third. Battled well but not able to break the opposition down. Left the field to a standing ovation. Booked.
