Eddie Howe made six changes to the side that lost 2-1 at Marseille in the Champions League on Tuesday night with goalkeeper Nick Pope dropping out due to a groin injury. Aaron Ramsdale came in for his full Premier League debut while Lewis Hall, Lewis Miley, Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and Nick Woltemade came in for Fabian Schar, Jacob Murphy, Sandro Tonali, Joe Willock and Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle went into the game having not won away from home in the Premier League since April. But on their first visit to the Hill Dickinson Stadium, they got off to a flyer as Malick Thiaw headed in his first goal for the club since his £35million arrival from AC Milan.

Newcastle had taken the lead in each of their last three away matches but ended up losing all three. Failing to find the second goal in those games was ultimately United’s undoing but on this occasion things were different as Lewis Miley lashed in a second to make it 2-0 before the half-hour mark.

Nick Woltemade then made it 3-0 just before half-time with a cheeky dink over Pickford after some good work from Anthony Elanga to set him up.

Here are the Newcastle United half-time player ratings from the match (full-time ratings available here)...

Aaron Ramsdale - 6

In the side for his full Premier League debut for Newcastle. Played a couple of smart passes out from the back but kept quiet.

Tino Livramento - 6

Looked a little off with his touch when trying to carry the ball forward. His energy and work rate helped Newcastle pose a threat down the right.

Malick Thiaw - 8

Headed in his first goal for the club inside the opening minute.

Dan Burn - 7

Did well to block Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s low cross. Reacted smartly to keep play alive to set up Miley’s goal.

Lewis Hall - 7

An important block early on. Hit the bar with a deflected effort. Got forward well but missed a few opportunities to get the ball into the box.

Lewis Miley - 9

Put a great ball into the box to set up Thiaw. Grabbed his first goal of the season with a powerful strike to force an error from Jordan Pickford. Battled well in midfield to win back possession on a few occasions. Top class.

Bruno Guimaraes - 6

Kept composure in the middle of the park to steer Newcastle into a strong position.

Joelinton - 6

Made some important defensive contributions but in and out of the game in an attacking sense.

Anthony Elanga - 8

Burst clear to win the corner inside the opening minute that led to Thiaw’s goal. Drove forward well with the ball and asked questions of the defenders. His hard work was rewarded with his first assist of the season to set up Woltemade.

Harvey Barnes - 6

Saw a good opportunity saved by Jordan Pickford. Played with confidence on the ball.

Nick Woltemade - 7

Released Elanga for a good opportunity in the opening minutes. Typically strong hold up play when dropping deep. A filthy chip put Newcastle 3-0 up just before the break.
