After a goalless first half which saw Newcastle miss several opportunities to score, the hosts finally took the lead through Dan Burn. The left-back burst forward to net his first goal for the club in front of the Gallowgate End.
Joelinton then doubled United’s lead in the 72nd minute with a neat finish from Miguel Almiron’s well-weighted pass.
It’s the first time Newcastle have reached the semi-final of the League Cup since 1976.
Here are the Newcastle player ratings from the match...
5. Dan Burn - 8
Tidy in possession but booked after being caught on the back foot. Should have done better with a header from a Kieran Trippier free-kick. Finally took his chance to grab his first goal for the club with a right-footed finish. | Getty Images
6. Bruno Guimaraes - 8
Very tidy in possession but will be disappointed not to have scored. Saw an early chance from the edge of the box go wide. Did the same again 10 minutes later and once more on the stroke of half-time. | Getty Images
7. Sean Longstaff - 6
Should have scored in the opening minute and saw a decent effort saved by Danny Ward in the first half. Worked hard in the middle to keep Newcastle on the front foot. Booked. | AFP via Getty Images
8. Joe Willock - 7
A persistent threat down the left in the first half just lacked end product. Faded slightly in the second but continued to link play up well. | Getty Images
