Newcastle United players CAN repair divide with fans amid Mike Ashley anger & apathy

Newcastle United’s players have the power to reconnect the football club with their fanbase – that’s the view of boss Steve Bruce.

Fan anger and apathy has never been higher at St James's Park. United have attempted to diffuse the situation, and tackle ever-dwindling crowds by handing out free half season tickets, which kick in against Everton next Saturday.

And Bruce believes the players have a massive part to play in the healing process.

“We’ve got a quite unique support and that brings expectation with it. That’s what I’m trying to achieve anyway,” said Bruce ahead of Boxing Day’s visit to Manchester United.

“When you have games and moments like Saturday (the 1-0 win over Crystal Palace), it can only try to bring the supporters back. Our supporters will always back the team. If there is a repair job to be done, hopefully we’re putting it back on the right track again.”

Old Trafford has never been a happy hunting ground for United – in fact, you could say that about most of the rest of the Premier League.

But they head there with a clear gameplan, according to Bruc - and he’s confidet the players can deliver.

“We set them up but they’ve got to show they’re resolute, difficult to play against and difficult to beat,” he said.

“They’re a good group. If they stay like that they deserve the rewards they’re getting at the moment. We’ve got to be very pleased over the last few months.

“We’ve got Man U, Everton and Leicester, difficult games. We’ve given ourselves a platform but were only halfway there."

Spirit and creating the right working environment are cornerstones of what Bruce builds his side around.

He thinks that’s been evident in recent performances, especially the late wins.

“It’s not being fair, wherever I try to go it’s vitally important to try to create a spirit where people enjoy coming to work,” said Bruce.

“That’s how you get the best out of people. You have to lay the law down at times but they’ve responded to myself and the lads I’ve brought in, and the staff who were here before have all bought in to what we want to achieve.”
