Two relegations, even if two immediate promotions followed, tells the tale of what has been a grim existence as a fan of Mike Ashley’s United.
There have been moments in that time, but nothing more than glimmers. Players have come and gone – some good, a few too many not so good. Our writers Miles Starforth & Liam Kennedy rank the BEST 25 to play in black and white between 2010 and 2020.
5. Loic Remy
In the history of Newcastle United, few defenders have ever had the skillset of the Switzerland international. A class act from the heart of defence, who can hopefully continue his classy, goalscoring exploits at St James's Park well into the next decade. A new contract is a must for Schar, whose current deal is up in 2021. Photo: Richard Sellers
6. Ayoze Perez
Perez had his detractors during his time at Newcastle United, but the contribution he made during his five years on Tyneside was immense. Perez led the line on his own soon after arriving as an unknown from Tenerife in 2014. The forward was one of the best finishers at the club, but it was his workrate and pressing which ensured he was one of the first names on Benitez’s teamsheet. Perez formed an enviable three-man attack with Salomon Rondon and Miguel Almiron last season. Photo: Henry Browne
7. Jonas Gutierrez
Jonas Gutierrez spent seven eventful years at St James’s Park following his move from Real Mallorca. Gutierrez wasn’t the most gifted winger, but he was one of the hardest-working players at the club. Famed for pulling on a Spider-Man mask when he scored, Gutierrez quickly won over fans. Gutierrez saved the best for last. After bravely taking on – and beating – cancer he scored one goal and set up another in his final appearance to keep the club up. Photo: Stu Forster
8. Yohan Cabaye
Left under a cloud, having once gone on strike, but his exit should take little shine off what was a quite remarkable career on Tyneside. Technically brilliant, with a great range of passing, ability to tackle, read the game and score goals, Cabaye was given a bit of a free licence in midfield by Alan Pardew, with Cheick Tiote doing much of his dirty work. And it worked wonders as Cabaye became one of the most sought-after midfielders on the planet while on Tyneside. Photo: Mike Hewitt
