Two relegations, even if two immediate promotions followed, tells the tale of what has been a grim existence as a fan of Mike Ashley’s United.
There have been moments in that time, but nothing more than glimmers. Players have come and gone – some good, a few too many not so good. Our writers Miles Starforth & Liam Kennedy rank the BEST 25 to play in black and white between 2010 and 2020.
13. Tim Krul
Signed as an unknown as a teenager, Tim Krul went on to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers during his time at Newcastle United. He kept a clean sheet in an unforgettable debut in a UEFA Cup tie away to Palermo, and succeeded Steve Harper between the posts. Krul was also an important voice in the dressing room as the club, under Alan Pardew, re-established itself in the Premier League. 14. Matt Ritchie
Matt Ritchie has proved to be one of Rafa Benitez’s best signings at Newcastle United. The winger – the first on the training pitch and the last off it day in, day out – was perfect for the Championship following the club’s relegation. Ritchie was also perfect for the Premier League, seamlessly adapting to a wing-back role following a tactical change from Benitez. Ritchie, as tenacious as he is talented, gives everything to the team and demands everything from his team-mates. | Getty Images Photo: Catherine Ivill
15. Steven Taylor
Taylor played 268 games for Newcastle United during a 12-year first-team career at St James’s Park which ended in 2016 following the club’s relegation to the Championship. However, had it not been for injuries, Taylor – who made his debut during Sir Bobby Robson’s time at the club – would unquestionably have played a lot more times for his boyhood club. 16. Cheick Tiote
A player who burst on the scene after a relatively under the radar arrival from the Eredivisie after United's promotion under Chris Hughton. Not many knew who he was before he arrived but plenty of midfielders did once he got here - many with the marks to show for it. Sadly the midfielder is no longer with us but will be forever remembered for THAT goal in the 4-4 draw against Arsenal. Shoooooooot! | Getty Images Photo: Michael Regan
