Two relegations, even if two immediate promotions followed, tells the tale of what has been a grim existence as a fan of Mike Ashley’s United.
There have been moments in that time, but nothing more than glimmers. Players have come and gone – some good, a few too many not so good. Our writers Miles Starforth & Liam Kennedy rank the BEST 25 to play in black and white between 2010 and 2020.
21. Moussa Sissoko
A player who divides opinion on Tyneside - in fact, that's not fair at all... Newcastle fans do not have much love at all for the Frenchman. Few players have made such an explosive impact on the Premier League as Sissoko did - he was a powerhouse, quick, strong, could drive past players - but his end at United was as a stark contrast to his arrival. Rafa Benitez saw him as a key player - and that tells all really. Photo: Ian MacNicol
22. Dwight Gayle
Gayle makes the list for one season and one season only. A Rafa Benitez buy who took the Championship by storm in the Spaniard's first year, since then has proven he's not up to it in the Premier League at United. But those 23 goals in 34 appearances as NUFC won the second tier title sees him sneak into the 25. Photo: Ian MacNicol
23. Jose Enrique
One of the trio of Spanish speakers in the United XI in the promotion season and another who really came into his own outside the top flight, to then hit the ground running back in the Premier League. His outstanding performances secured a move to Liverpool. Just edged Mathieu Debuchy and Daryl Janmaat out of the 25. Photo: Jamie Sabau
24. Papiss Cisse
A striker capable of the absolutely sublime and bizarrely amateur in equal measure at times, but that unpredictability caused absolute mayhem for the Premier League when he arrived from the Bundesliga in the January of 2012. It didn't take him long to get going with a half-volley on debut off the bench v Aston Villa in February, in April there was the sublime Swansea chip, then those TWO remarkable strikes at Stamford Bridge as United just missed out on the Champions League, finishing fifth. Cisse was never quite as good as in those first few months, but what an impact. In total, registered 44 goals in 131 games. Not bad for £8million. Photo: Ian MacNicol
