Newcastle United post classy 15-word tribute as iconic goalscorer passes away

Hereford United legend Ronnie Radford – scorer of the famous goal that knocked Newcastle United out of the FA Cup in 1972 – has sadly passed away, age 79.

Radford wrote his name into FA Cup folklore in February 1972 for scoring a late 30-yard equaliser against Newcastle in a third-round replay at Edgar Street that non-league Hereford went on to win 2-1 after extra time.

The midfielder, who was at Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday as a youngster before forging a career in the lower-leagues, saw hisgoal from the FA Cup ‘giant-killing’ has been replayed countless times over the years.

And Hereford confirmed Radford’s passing in a club statement: “We are devastated to hear of Ronnie’s passing, and wish to extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends at this very sad time.

“Ronnie is not just a part of Hereford United folklore, he is a part of football history and has kept Hereford on the football map since 1972.

"His mild manner, and friendly and modest approach to life epitomised the man he was and he was always delighted to visit Edgar Street, to meet up with past teammates and watch the present day team in action.

“We will always keep Ronnie close to our hearts at Edgar Street, not just at FA Cup moments, but forever and celebrate him and his huge role in propelling Hereford United to the forefront of the nations attention with that goal and being part of that team.”

And on Twitter, Newcastle posted a classy response.

The club account tweeted: “Though against us, a goal forever written into FA Cup folklore. Rest in peace, Ronnie.”
