The official attendance for today’s home game with Southampton was announced as 42,303 some 10,000 down on St James’s Park’s capacity.

It is a further sign that United fans are staying away from matchday’s following discontent with the club’s ownership and direction under Mike Ashley.

The previous lowest Premier League attendance was 43,360, recorded against Brighton.

The lowest league crowd of the Ashley era was recorded in November 2010 against Blackburn.
