Eibar’s director of football has claimed that he got the upper hand in talks with Newcastle United over a deal for Yoshinori Muto.

Muto last month joined the La Liga club on a season-long loan after two difficult years at St James’s Park. The forward, signed by Rafa Benitez from Mainz for £9.5million, had been told that he was not in Steve Bruce’s plans for this season.

Fran Garagarza, Eibar’s director of football, has spoken about the deal, which he claims Newcastle had told him would be “impossible” a week a week earlier.

“Newcastle told us, either you reach some figures – or Muto does not leave,” Garagarza is quotes as saying by AS. “We told them that it was impossible. A week later, the Japanese forward arrived on loan to Eibar for the figures that we initially told them.”

Muto, 28, has two years left on his contract at Newcastle.
