Graeme Jones is on Tyneside after Newcastle United agreed a compensation deal – and ready to start work.

Jones, first-team coach at Bournemouth, is set to join Steve Bruce’s backroom team at the relegation-threatened club, which lost 2-1 to Leeds United last night.

Newcastle are understood to have agreed a £250,000 compensation deal for Gateshead-born Jones with the Championship club.

“With what’s gone on in the last few weeks (with Covid-19), we’ve been a bit short,” said head coach Bruce earlier this week. “That’s when it was brought to prominence. A fresh voice, a fresh idea, is never a bad thing.

"We’ve been talking about it for a while. We’ve brought Ben Dawson up from the Academy, who’ll stay with us until the end of the season. There’s nothing quite like a new face. He (Jones) is a Newcastle fan, and I think that’s what tipped him our way. He wants to come and work at his hometown club.”
