Newcastle United set to exploit Premier League rule with £18m Ewen Jaouen transfer
Newcastle United have made Ewen Jaouen the club’s first signing of the summer.
Newcastle United can use a Premier League rule to their advantage with the signing of Ewen Jaouen from Stade de Reims for £18million.
The Magpies confirmed the 20-year-old goalkeeper’s arrival on Wednesday afternoon to become their first signing of the summer.
The news follows several departure announcements with Anthony Gordon sold to Barcelona for £70million and Kieran Trippier, Aaron Ramsdale, John Ruddy, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett were all announced to be leaving the club when their deals expire. Trippier has since agreed a contract at Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It leaves Newcastle with five places to fill in their Premier League squad for the 2026/27 campaign. Targett was not included in Newcastle’s squad last season as he was out on loan at Middlesbrough.
Premier League squad rules
The Magpies will be able to name up to 25 senior players in their Premier League squad for the upcoming season. But any players born on or after January 1, 2005 are not included in the squad list but are still eligible to play.
As Jaouen is born on December 29, 2005, he will not take up a squad place despite being a significant addition to the squad. The same goes for 20-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley but Lewis Hall, who was not included in last season’s squad list, will now have to be included as he turns 22 in September.
