One of the names who has been linked with a move to St James's Park over the last few days is Manchester United’s Phil Jones.

And the Northern Echo is the latest to report the Magpies’ interest in the England defender – adding that United will try to sign him on loan with owner Mike Ashley unwilling to sanction any permanent deals.

A potential stumbling block to that however is Jones’ rumoured £100,000-a-week wages, a sum will undoubtedly have to negotiate around.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also being credited with an interest in former youngster James Tavernier alongside Tottenham Hotspur, as per the Daily Mail via TEAMTalk.
