The Magpies are reportedly eyeing a deal for the 20-year-old Scotland youth international, but face stiff competition from Celtic and Championship outfit Stoke City.

Turnbull’s goalscoring exploits from midfield have earned rave reviews north of the border, and but for injury, would have made the switch to Celtic Park last summer.

And while Champions League football with Celtic or Premier League with Newcastle would certainly carry more appeal, a report in the Daily Record claims Stoke boss Michael O’Neill is positioning his club to steal in ahead of the other two.

Meanwhile, following on from talk of Atletico Madrid’s interest in Miguel Almiron, the player’s father – Ruben Almiron – has spoken out about his son’s future.

On Paraguayan radio, Almiron said: "There is nothing from Atlético Madrid, nobody contacted him.

"Rather it was a rumour from the Spanish press."
