Newcastle United sponsorship deal under threat

A review of gambling laws will be launched next week – and it will consider a ban on sports sponsorship, according to the Guardian.

Newcastle United signed a new “long-term” agreement with gaming firm FUN88 in the summer.

Speaking in July, managing director Lee Charnley said: “We are delighted FUN88 has renewed its relationship with Newcastle United, and committed its support to the club over a number of years to come. Building on the success of our partnership to date, we look forward to this next phase and working together to engage fans and grow our collective reach around the globe."

However, a ban on sports sponsorship will reportedly be considered over concerns about the “gamification” of football, and the gambling industry could also face limits on online stakes, prizes and spin speeds. Tough affordability checks could also be introduced following the review.
