Newcastle United's squad market value ahead of January transfer window

The January transfer window is fast approaching, but what is the market value of Newcastle's existing squad?

The January transfer window is just around the corner, and given the start to the season they’ve endured so far, Newcastle United might feel compelled to splash a little more cash.

Despite some frustrations and missed targets, the Magpies still spent big over the summer to sign the likes of Yoane Wissa, Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw and Jacob Ramsey - largely fuelled by the sale of Alexander Isak to Liverpool.

Newcastle are going well in their EFL Cup defence, reaching the semi-finals, while they look primed to make the Champions League knockout rounds. However, it’s been a frustrating Premier League campaign so far, with Eddie Howe’s men 12th after 16 games, with just 22 points on the board. With that in mind, a few surgical strikers in the transfer market might not hurt. But first, what is the market value of Newcastle’s existing squad, and how does it compare to their Premier League rivals?

Newcastle United’s squad value compared to Sunderland and other Premier League rivals

Per Transfermarkt data, Newcastle have 28 players registered in their senior squad, which is the sixth-largest in the Premier League. Eddie Howe’s players carry an average market value of €25.46m, with a total squad market value of €712.95m - both totals only beaten by the supposed ‘big six’.

Midfield duo Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes carry the highest market value at €75m each, with veteran back-up goalkeeper John Ruddy at the opposite end of the spectrum at just €100k. Premier League leaders Arsenal have the highest squad market value right now at €1.29bn, joined north of the €1bn mark by Manchester City (€1.19bn), Chelsea (€1.18bn) and Liverpool (€1.04bn). Meanwhile, newly-promoted strugglers Burnley have the least valuable squad at €253.75m. Newcastle’s Wear-Tyne rivals, Sunderland, have a squad market value of €365.05m, which is the fifth-lowest in the Premier League.
