As revealed by the Gazette in January, Kabak was close to joining the Magpies before Jurgen Klopp’s Reds swopped in at the last-minute.

The Turkish international failed to make a telling impact on loan at Anfield. Schalke, having been relegated from the Bundesliga, are keen to offload him.

However, while the 21-year-old remains a target for United, his reported £18million price tag may be a non-starter.

Matty Longstaff will ask to leave this summer – reports

Football Insider reports that Matty Longstaff will ask to leave Newcastle after being restricted to just four Premier League starts this term.

The midfielder signed a new two-year contract with his boyhood club last summer but last appeared for the first team in January.

The site claims Longstaff feels Bruce has broken several promises over his game time and will ask to leave if an acceptable offer comes in for him this summer.

While the 21-year-old is keen to leave St James’s Park, it is believed he will not hand in an official transfer request.

Kristoffer Ajer tipped to be a success at Newcastle

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer would be a good signing for Newcastle.

It is understood the Magpies are weighing up an £8m offer for the Norwegian as he enters the final year of his contract at Parkhead.

Norwich City are also keen on the 23-year-old but Bruce and co are said to be in pole position.

Campbell told Football Insider: “Ajer has done very well for Celtic over the years, I think now is the time for him to make the next step.

“He is playing for a massive club in Celtic but he needs to test himself against the best and let’s be honest, to do that he needs to come down to England. The Premier League is the best league in the world.

“I am sure there will be takers for him, it is just a matter of what clubs are willing to pay and where he sees himself. I could see him at Newcastle, I think he’d do well there.”
