Newcastle United summer signing suffers injury setback

It’s another setback for the Newcastle United summer signing.

Newcastle United summer signing Vakhtang Salia has suffered another injury setback.

The young Georgian forward agreed to join Newcastle in the latter months of 2024 but had to wait until his 18th birthday last August before completing the move.

Salia arrived on Tyneside with plenty of promise after the Magpies fought off competition from several top clubs, however his time has been plagued by injury so far.

It wasn’t until last month that, after seven months out with a hamstring injury, Salia made his long-awaited under-21s debut as he opened the scoring in a 2-1 friendly win over Northern Ireland under-19s.

Salia then made a further two appearances, both in Premier League 2. He again found the net in a 2-2 draw with Leicester City before playing the final quarter of an hour in a 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers four days later.

And that cameo was Salia’s last appearance. His absence hasn’t gone unnoticed and The Gazette can reveal the attacker has picked up another injury.

Whether it is a recurrence of his recent hamstring issue or a fresh issue could not be confirmed, nor could a potential timeframe. But with the season nearly over, it’s likely Salia won’t be back in action until next season.

Newcastle under-21s rounded off their regular season with a 1-1 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers last week to finish 21st out of 29 teams in Premier League 2.

Robbie Stockdale’s side will compete in the Professional Development League play-offs, with the draw due to take place this week.
