Newcastle United star at risk of Premier League ban as key man avoids punishment
Newcastle United suspensions: The Magpies have one player still at risk of a ban in the Premier League - and no points for guessing who.
Newcastle United now have just one player still at risk of a yellow card ban in the Premier League this season.
Dan Burn avoiding a booking in Newcastle’s 1-0 win at Chelsea on Saturday evening means he avoids a potential two-match ban in the Premier League for accumulating 10 yellow cards.
Burn has been booked seven times in the Premier League this season. Premier League rules state a player will face a two-match suspension if they accumulate 10 bookings in the opening 32 matches of the league season.
NUFC man avoids suspension - but Joelinton still at risk
With United’s win at Chelsea being their 30th league game of the 2025/26 campaign, Burn can no longer reach the 10 yellow card tally by the 32nd game of the season.
But one player who remains at risk is Joelinton. The Brazilian has been booked eight times in the Premier League this season and will face a two-match ban should he be booked in Newcastle’s next two league matches against Sunderland and Crystal Palace.
Should he avoid a booking in either of those games, he will avoid a ban entirely.
No other members of Newcastle’s squad are at risk of a ban, with captain Bruno Guimaraes the next most cautioned player with five.
Newcastle haven’t had any players suspended for yellow card this season but Jacob Ramsey and Burn have both been banned for one game after being sent off for two yellows. Anthony Gordon was handed a three-match ban at the start of the season after picking up a straight red card against Liverpool.
NUFC Champions League ban risks
While only Joelinton remains at risk of a ban in the Premier League, he is one of four players at risk of a Champions League ban.
Newcastle return to Champions League action against Barcelona in the last-16 second leg at Camp Nou on Wednesday night.
Should Joelinton, Burn, Joe Willock or Sandro Tonali be booked in that match and Newcastle win, they would miss the first leg of the quarter-final.
All four players have been shown two bookings in the Champions League with three bookings before the quarter-finals are concluded seeing the offending player banned for one match.
Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw recently served his suspension in Newcastle’s 3-2 win over Qarabag at St James’ Park last month.
