Newcastle United takeover lawyer tweets intriguing link
The sports lawyer leading Newcastle United’s legal action against the Premier League has revealed a family link to Tyneside.
Nick De Marco is representing the club and owner Mike Ashley, who wants to resurrect a £300million takeover.
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund withdrew its backing for a bid led by financier Amanda Staveley in the summer over the Premier League’s failure to make a decision on its approval following months of deliberations.
De Marco has tweeted an intriguing link to the city’s well-know Mark Toney chain of ice cream parlours. The QC said: “A link with Newcastle and my family. The Marcantonio family, cousins of the De Marcos from Picinisco in Italy, settled their Italian ice cream business in Newcastle, and I’m glad to find it’s still there. Another place I must visit one day.”
Who’s Who Legal describe De Marco, from Blackstone Chambers, as a “top-tier sports silk”. Shaheed Fatima QC is also representing Newcastle.
