Reports in Germany this morning suggested the former Atletico Madrid defender was a target for the Magpies, following the £300million purchase of the club by the Saudi consortium.

Manuel Garcia Quilon, the player’s agent, has told Sky Germany that the 24-year-old, part of the French World Cup winning squad of 2018, will remain with Bayern.

He said: "Lucas will not move and will definitely stay with Bayern."

Meanwhile, Italian publication Tuttosport claim United are set to step up their interest in free agent Edinson Cavani.

The Turin-based publication believe the Magpies, under new ownership, will rival Serie A side Inter Milan for the 33-year-old Uruguayan’s signature.

The report also states MLS side Inter Miami and Atletico Madrid are interested in the PSG player, who is unlikely to be offered a new deal in Ligue 1.
