Bayern Munich confirm Anthony Gordon ‘conversation’ - £75m Newcastle United exit looks inevitable
Bayern Munich are now making no secret of their desire to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has vowed to sign an attacking player this summer.
And when asked about Anthony Gordon, the 52-year-old claimed to have “had a very good conversation” regarding signing the player. One of the worst-kept secrets in football is that Bayern are chasing the Newcastle United winger.
Gordon has not played for the Magpies since the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace on April 12. After recovering from a hip problem, he has been an unused substitute for Newcastle’s past three Premier League games.
What Eddie Howe said about Anthony Gordon
Eddie Howe has admitted on several occasions in recent weeks to having one eye on the future when explaining Gordon’s absence. Speaking on Friday, the Toon boss refused to confirm whether the 25-year-old - valued at £75million - will play again in black-and-white stripes.
“That's a difficult one for me to comment on in terms of how he should be remembered because that's us almost saying that he is going, and there's no guarantee,” Howe said. “We don't know at this moment whether it will be his last game.
“Obviously, I’ve picked a team, as I've said many times in the last few weeks, that's been performing well. Anthony has come back from injury. He's been great around the group. He's been absolutely part of the team, so, there's been no issues.
“Let's see what happens. I think the right time to give an answer to that question will be if he does leave. And then I'll obviously discuss that with him.”
Bayern Munich chief speaks out
As quoted in German outlet Bild, Bayern chief Eberl noted having a productive conversation with an unnamed player. It is understood that the Bundesliga giants are growing in confidence that a deal can be done - but they are yet to meet Newcastle’s demands.
“We agree that we will sign an attacking player if he can be financed,” Eberl said. “We had a very good conversation and hope we can make progress.”
