The truth on James Trafford as fresh Newcastle United transfer priority revealed

Newcastle United decided against continuing their James Trafford interest after a brief enquiry after the World Cup.

Newcastle United have cooled their interest in James Trafford despite making him a top target for three consecutive summer windows.

The Manchester City goalkeeper was always set to decide his future following the World Cup. Trafford failed to make a single appearance as England secured a third-place play-off across the pond.

It is understood that the former Burnley man was open to a St James’ Park switch prior to the tournament. However, when contacted earlier this week, it became clear that his heart lay elsewhere.

Leeds United are now the front-runners to sign Trafford for a reported £35million. Newcastle still have a goalkeeper on their shopping list despite buying France prospect Ewen Jaouen.

The 20-year-old arrived knowing he would likely challenge a more experienced No.1 for the gloves. For now, Nick Pope remains the first-choice goalie at St James’ Park despite the club being open to offers.

Pope is in the final year of his contract on Tyneside and made several high-profile errors last season. Newcastle are targeting a keeper that can combine his excellent shot-stopping ability with efficiency in playing out from the back.

Elsewhere, the Magpies have also prioritised a full-back who can operate on both sides. After losing Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth and Matt Targett, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento remain the only first-team options.

Full-back is an area Newcastle have identified since the winter window. They have targets - but the transfer cards are being kept close to their chest at St James’ Park.

The internal feeling is that, when a target is leaked publicly and the saga drags on, the chances of finalising the deal diminish. Newcastle can sense when they are being played - Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi were examples of that.

Patience is being urged as Toon officials work tirelessly to give Eddie Howe the tools for a successful season. Fans can watch the Magpies for the first time in pre-season when they face Gateshead this weekend.
