Reports suggest the France international could be shown the door at Stamford Bridge, but is seeking an 18-month deal in what is likely to be the 33-year-old’s last major move.

And while United could look to a six-month loan deal, Spurs and Inter are Giroud’s preferred destination, should he leave West London in the closing days of the transfer window.

United boss Steve Bruce is keen to add at least one new face to his ranks before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

Danny Rose is, at this stage, likely to head to Tyneside on loan. The deal could be made permanent in the summer.

A striker, at this stage, would be seen as an unexpected bonus.

Bruce is desperate for cover on the left with Paul Dummett and Jetro Willems struck from the 25-man squad after suffering season-ending injuries.
