Portuguese print publication Record claim United would not have to cough up the player’s £25million contractual release clause, although they would have to up their reported initial approach.
Meanwhile, according to the Daily Record in Scotland, United continue to keep an eye on French frontman Odsonne Edouard.
Everton and Manchester United are also claimed to be interested in the player, who is rated in the £30million bracket by Celtic.

Elsewhere, former Magpies midfielder Ki Sung-yueng has been signed by Spanish side RCD Mallorca.
The South Korean international, formerly of Sunderland, Celtic and Swansea City, has signed a short-term deal until June 30, 2020.
Ki was released by manager Steve Bruce on the final day of the transfer window in January, as United looked to trim down their Premier League squad following the arrival of Nabil Bentaleb, Valentino Lazaro and Danny Rose.
