A former defender and reported Steve Bruce target is set to be a casualty of a summer clear out by Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, according to reports north of the border.

Tavernier, who started his career at St James’s Park, is one of a number of players who is likely to be put up for sale as Gerrard and the Gers look to further close the gap between themselves and Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Despite wanting around £15million for the goal and assist-laden full-back as little as six months ago, Rangers are thought to be asking just £4million for the 28-year-old in the summer.

West Brom and Aston Villa are also said to be keen.

It remains to be seen whether United will be looking for a right-back this summer with Emil Krafth and DeAndre Yedlin contracted beyond the summer and Javier Manquillo under consideration for a new deal.
