The Poland international finds himself third in the Rossoneri frontline pecking order with the return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to the San Siro.

And despite the club wanting to keep him, Piatek is understood to be weighing up his January options as he looks ahead to cementing a place in the Polish squad for this summer's European Championships.

According to reports on the continent, former Genoa frontman Piatek prefers a move to the London Stadium, as Mourinho looks to find a ready-made replacement for Harry Kane, who suffered a 'serious' hamstring injury recently.

Discussing the situation with Italian publication Corriere della Sera, Stefano Pioli said: “As for Piatek, If you play for Milan and a quality player arrives then you must be stimulated and happy: the more that is the case, the higher your chances are of winning.”

He continued: "Ibra is playing the centre forward, then we will see if we will play with him and another.

"With Piatek? It can be done, just keep the team balance.

"All the offensive development that we will have in the future with the probable presence of Ibra is all to be studied and developed.

"I think the important thing in a team is to put quality players in possession of the ball."

United are said to have held talks with Milan over taking goalscorer Piatek on loan with the option to buy in the summer.

Should he leave, it is understood Milan would prefer a straight sale with Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Spurs all monitoring the striker's situation.

Newcastle boss Steve Bruce is looking to add a frontman to his ranks in the January window with Joelinton, Dwight Gayle, Andy Carroll and Yoshinori Muto sharing just two goals in all competitions between them this season.

Piatek, 24, has scored four goals for Milan this season in 18 games.

Meanwhile, Dwight Gayle exit talk has resurfaced amid links to West Brom and Leeds United.
