Another player Bruce is thought to be eyeing is 20-year-old PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

Foot Mercato reports that the 6ft 2in wideman has also attracted interest from French side Lyon after establishing himself in the PSV first team this season.

The Dutch youngster has scored five goals and created eight in 31 appearances in all competitions this season and is believed to be valued at around £10 million.

Elsewhere, Villareal forward Karl Toko-Ekambi may be available to Newcastle, with the La Liga outfit reportedly willing to let the forward leave for £21 million.

United manager Steve Bruce is expected to meet with owner Mike Ashley with the hope of sanctioning a big-money January signing. The Magpies are yet to bring in a player this January as they approach the halfway stage in the transfer window.

Last January, they did break the bank to land Paraguayan midfielder Miguel Almiron from MLS side Atlanta for what was believed to be a club record fee at the time.
