Exclusive:Newcastle United complete double transfer deal - pushing for third summer signing plus two that won't happen

Newcastle United news and transfers: The Magpies have agreed two big deals this past week - with more to come.

Newcastle United are getting down to business this summer transfer window after two major deals agreed over the past week.

The expected departure of Sandro Tonali has been agreed with Tottenham Hotspur striking a deal with Newcastle worth up to £100million. The Magpies have also acted quickly to sign Bazoumana Toure from Hoffenheim as a replacement for Anthony Gordon.

But more incomings are expected, and necessary, while there are other players in Newcastle’s squad who could also leave this summer. It’s led to some big questions regarding what is next for Newcastle in the transfer market...

Our sports editor Dominic Scurr has answered a few of them here...

What is the latest with Bruno Guimaraes?

After the sale of Sandro Tonali, Newcastle have been very strong in their stance that club captain Bruno Guimaraes is not for sale.

This is despite interest from Arsenal and strong links with a move away from the club.

The club have shut down any talk of a buy-out clause that could be triggered or even a fee that would see them entertain a sale. Guimaraes is under contract at St James’ Park until 2028 but, as revealed by The Gazette, they hold a one-year extension option which strengthens their hand.

But the message is clear: Bruno Guimaraes is not for sale at any price this summer.

Still, that does not mean he will not be sold. If Guimaraes were to push to leave Newcastle this summer, that changes the situation.

It’s important Newcastle act like a club that wants their biggest asset to remain through investing in quality players to replace those who have left while also offering him a bumper new contract.

As long as Guimaraes doesn’t push to leave this summer, he will stay.

Newcastle United have sold Sandro Tonali - do they have midfield reinforcements lined-up?

Newcastle are looking to strengthen in midfield following Sandro Tonali’s departure. The club would ideally look to cash in on Joe Willock this summer too, given he is now into the final year of his contract at St James’ Park.

The name on everyone’s lips at the moment is Johan Manzambi. The Freiburg and Switzerland winger has certainly caught the eye at the World Cup so far with three goals and two assists, including an excellent set-up for Breel Embolo in the 2-0 last-32 win over Algeria.

Newcastle like the player and will make a move to sign him. But there is some caution given their interest has gone public and there are other parties interested in the 20-year-old.

As previously reported, Newcastle’s interest in Felix Nmecha from Borussia Dortmund is understood to be a non-starter. The German midfielder recently signed a new deal at Dortmund and has been deemed too expensive for Newcastle to pursue despite holding a historic interest in him.

AZ Alkmaar midfielder Kees Smit was on Newcastle’s radar back in January and has since re-emerged as a potential target. I’ve been told Newcastle have since moved on from the 20-year-old.

NUFC goalkeeper situation?

Elsewhere in Newcastle’s squad, they will look to sign a right-back after the departures of Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth. A goalkeeper addition is also high on the agenda following the departures of John Ruddy, Aaron Ramsdale, Odysseas Vlachodimos and Max Thompson.

Nick Pope is also facing an uncertain future and will be allowed to leave this summer should a suitable offer come in.

Ewen Jaouen is set to be the back-up goalkeeper this coming campaign but will be given a chance to shine in pre-season.

The club’s love for James Trafford is well documented and he would be a dream goalkeeper signing this summer. Interest remains but nothing is forthcoming at this stage.

If not Trafford, Newcastle will look to sign an experienced goalkeeper should Pope depart. They will also bolster their squad with a third-choice goalkeeper, likely on a free.
